one thing I have to admit though is that that storefront has always deeply confused and disturbed me. Museum & artist residency set in a 3-floor, former, thrift store. an inspiration for art, maybe, but then anything could be. all the meetings and classes and mutual intellectual masturbation in the world can't remake the history of that store into anything resembling art any more than the abandoned hulk of a forgotten accident is sculpture. a loneliness surrounds the building and always has. and nothing unifying about insisting the emperor's junk room is a museum. there's nothing alive about a store where nothing is for sale. and it's not a living monument as described. to one who was a witness to the tail end of that process, the neglect, the inactivity, the hoarding you could see without going in, the assumed emotional disturbance, it seems more a monument to a troubled and troubling history. but this store doesn't seem to have become what it is in an effort to inspire or create art. if you're an artist then everything inspires expression, I suppose. anything can be an object to consider and a thing from which to derive artistic inspiration. and yet art has the power to speak honestly about common human experience and to unite us. the passage of time is a funny thing enough time passes and new people reinvent and revise your memories out from under you and you wonder if there is an impossible divide between each person's subjective experience maybe we're hopelessly separated. Elsewheres collaborative approach investigates storytelling and play as a means. now you have to go around the corner to remember the way it was when it was ours and normal people didn't go there. The museum is built on one woman’s (Sylvia Gray) collection of objects and materials while she ran a. and that was years ago and things change and so now the block has been reborn and there are expensive restaurants and a club or two. 994 The Elsewhere Collaborative is a non-profit museum located in downtown Greensboro, NC. in my memory it's always quiet and rainy there, and yet they are warm and loving memories and I always go back.
